Together we are Stronger
In a world where digital accessibility is often sidelined as low priority, redundancy is rife, and change is the only constant, our shared commitment to support one another is more vital than ever. Today my world was filled with connections, inspiration, and conversations that reaffirmed my passion for this work in the digital accessibility consultancy space.
Connecting with Colleagues
Last week one of my days began with an early online korero with my colleague and friend, Kirstin, a seasoned professional in the disability and DEI sectors. Our discussion about the crucial role of scaffolding in our industry was enlightening.
Just like physical scaffolding, the support we provide to each other is often temporary—offering necessary aid during challenging times and paving the way for sustainable change. Connections and communication are pivotal to achieving our objectives, especially when facing adversity.
Finding strength in our connections was evident as we exchanged ideas, resources, and contacts. This exchange reminded us both that we are stronger together.
Daily Stand-up
Next, our team gathered for our daily standup when we check in on one another's wellbeing, share ideas, and even find some humour amidst the day's complexities. Our routine covers four key questions: "How are you? How are your spoons? What do you have on? Do you have any blockers?"
This week, many shared their struggles influenced by the current economic climate. Yet even in the face of difficulties, our amazing team never fails to uplift one another with laughter and camaraderie. At the end of this meeting, it was clear again: we are all stronger together.
Knowledge Exchange
Later, I met with a couple of colleagues/clients to discuss digital identity, UX, and research. This chat centered on the challenges businesses are facing right now and brainstormed ways to collaborate for mutual benefit. Once again, the outcome resonated with our collective mission: we are all stronger together.
Celebrating Success
In the middle of some more client calls and emails, I received an email from one of our current clients. They wanted to share some love by sharing feedback from a client of theirs praising the improvements in digital accessibility, acknowledging our consistent support over the past year.
This success story exemplifies the impact of the scaffolding we provide clients, by providing support. The positive feedback shows the importance of accessibility for users, especially those who rely on assistive technology. The key takeaway from this success is simple: we are all stronger together.
Engaging with Community
In the evening, I attended the UX CHC Meetup, eager to hear stories from my favourite unicorn, Nick Bowmast. Bomo's experience in the industry means he knows it can be hard to convince teams unfamiliar with the value solid research practise to invest in looking before they leap. He still seeks the scaffolding of colleagues and provides the scaffolding for others.
With no other agenda in mind, I attended because I wanted to be there, because this meetup, and any meetup you choose to attend, provides scaffolding for you and others to support each other during what is a tough, tough economic climate, especially in the disability world.
Meetups like these not only provide essential support but also serve as platforms for everyone, from new grads to seasoned professionals, to come together, share knowledge, and uplift each other. This meetup reaffirmed an important message: we are all stronger together.
The job market is challenging—contracts and roles are scarce—but remember that you are not alone. Through genuine connections and collaboration, we can all demonstrate our capability and commitment to making a difference in the accessibility space.
If you’re facing challenges in your journey or simply want to chat, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Let’s continue to build this supportive community where everyone can thrive. Each connection we make and resource we share furthers our mission to ensure everyone is included in the digital landscape.
Together, we can advocate for better accessibility practices, educate others, and amplify the message that accessibility matters. Whether it's sharing resources, finding internships, or exchanging support during tough times, we can each play a role in fostering an inclusive environment.
Let’s lift each other up and continue advocating for meaningful change, ensuring that all voices are heard in the conversation. Together, we are stronger, and together, we will thrive.
Together, we are all stronger.
