Designing an Accessible Future: The NZ Transport Agency App
The Client
Our client, NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) – Waka Kotahi, plays a crucial role in keeping Aotearoa’s roads safe and efficient. Tasked with developing a new app to assist drivers in managing their licences and vehicles, NZTA recognised the importance of ensuring that this app is fully accessible to all users, particularly those with disabilities. With a clear vision of support and inclusion, they sought our expertise to make this innovative concept a reality.
Their Challenge
The primary challenge facing NZTA was the need for the new app to be fully accessible to all drivers, including those with diverse access needs. The app not only had to follow the WCAG 2.2 Level AA guidelines but also required a thoughtful design that addressed the various challenges disabled drivers may encounter. With this new concept in hand, NZTA wanted to connect with users in a meaningful way while ensuring that accessibility remained at the forefront of the development process.
Our Process
To tackle this ambitious project, we partnered closely with NZTA’s design, development, and test teams from very early in the process. Our first step was to review concept designs and code prior to their release, identifying any potential accessibility issues that could hinder user experience. This proactive approach ensured that essential modifications were made early in the process.
Next, we engaged in usability testing with individuals from disabled communities. This direct feedback provided invaluable insights into how real users interact with the app and highlighted specific access issues that needed addressing.
Alongside these sessions, we created edge case user stories that brought to life the unique challenges faced by disabled drivers. This helped the broader team grasp the diverse needs of users, ensuring that their voices were integral to the development process.
Our guidance extended throughout the project, with continuous support and advice on how best to enhance the app’s accessibility features. By actively listening to our users, we ensured that their experiences informed the app’s design and functionality.
Outcomes & Impact
The collaboration resulted in the NZ Transport Agency app being launched with a high level of confidence in its accessibility. NZTA gained a profound understanding of the varying needs of disabled drivers, which not only influenced the app’s design but also reinforced the organisation’s commitment to inclusivity.
As users embraced the app, we received positive feedback about its accessibility. The app empowers drivers to efficiently manage their licences and vehicles, regardless of their access needs. As a result, NZTA has established a lasting partnership with Access Advisors, further solidifying their dedication to prioritising accessibility for future developments.
Next Steps
Looking ahead, NZTA is enthusiastic about continuing its collaboration with us to ensure the app remains accessible as it evolves. We will work together to implement enhancements based on user feedback and industry best practices. Regular reviews and usability testing will help maintain the app's focus on inclusivity while adapting to the changing landscape of driver support.
Beyond this project, we are eager to extend our expertise to other organisations seeking to create accessible solutions. By fostering a culture of understanding and empathy, we believe we can help more businesses recognise the value of prioritising accessibility within their products. Together, we can drive meaningful change and create a more inclusive experience for all users.
In conclusion, our partnership with the NZ Transport Agency demonstrates a shared commitment to building a future where accessibility is not an afterthought but an integral part of design and development. We’re proud to have played a role in this journey and look forward to continued collaboration that empowers all drivers across Aotearoa.
