About Access Advisors

Access Advisors is a leading New Zealand owned and operated digital accessibility consultancy, initiated by Blind Low Vision NZ  (BLVNZ) in 2017. Our goal is to help make digital New Zealand a more inclusive place. Making products and services more accessible will make it easier for people with access needs to do the things others take for granted.

Current clients range from mainstream banks to government departments, with a little bit of agriculture, retail and politics thrown in for good measure. We explore websites, apps and other digital experiences to discover, design, develop and deliver digital solutions that comply with best practice and guidelines.

We provide research participants for discovery activities, do reviews and support and upskill delivery staff. We help companies embed accessibility into everything they do. We promote accessibility maturity by supporting companies to integrate accessible processes, training, procurement and strategy.

In January 2020 Access Advisors became a privately owned social enterprise and is now growing rapidly. Still partnered with BLVNZ, Access Advisors is now an independent, nationwide, pan-disability consultancy with staff who have more than 20 years of experience in access needs. We are also digitally nomadic, with staff working throughout New Zealand as client needs dictate.

About the Role

We are looking for either contract or permanent staff who are passionate about digital accessibility. We are looking for either a front end developer, tester or designer interested in taking their existing skill set and focusing it in on accessibility and making a difference.

The role will primarily be providing services to clients, but will also include helping to improve the services offered by Access Advisors. We are looking for someone to consult, champion and enable accessible practices for our clients, working with them to improve their accessibility.

While reviews currently make up the majority of our work we are trying to shift the focus left and encourage clients to look at discovery, definition and design activities as well as the traditional development and QA activities. So while you will have to do reviews there will be a range of other consultancy services required.

About the Right Person

We are looking for someone who has:

  • A solid core digital skill set (research, analysis, design, development or QA)
  • At least one year work experience in a digital role
  • Working knowledge of WCAG2.1 and awareness of WAI-ARIA
  • Knowledge of disabilities and access needs
  • Knowledge of assistive technology such as screen readers and speech input.

The right person would need to be:

  • Passionate about accessibility
  • Empathetic to the needs of people with access needs
  • Able to learn quickly on the job
  • Open and honest with a sense of humour
  • Happy, able and used to working remotely.
